A death interrupts Bellweather’s Lantern Fair. In this interactive murder mystery, you choose where to investigate, gather evidence, and make your accusation.

Paperback · English · Miles Harlowe

Printed to order: usually 3–5 business days, plus delivery. Shipping cost at checkout.

How the mystery works
  1. Start at section 001 and follow the choices—not the next page.
  2. Keep the evidence, collected words, and timeline in the notebook inside the book.
  3. Name a suspect and explain why. An unsupported accusation sends you back to reconsider with your evidence intact.

You only need a pencil. No dice, app, or outside research.

FROM SECTION 001 · THE CLOSED SHOE SHOP

Please finish them in that order.

Underneath, in a different hand:

Call if the bell rings before you touch it.

Theo read that twice as well.

He remembered the fairground. Everybody in Bellweather did, although remembering it and agreeing about it were apparently different things. Haddon said it had been a caravan lot before it was a fair. The woman at the pharmacy insisted her parents had taken her to an enormous glass theater there. Theo remembered a bare field behind a wet fence and his mother telling him the autumn market used the front portion now. He had never been beyond the dividing gate.

On the scanned plan, the rear portion contained eighteen structures.

He enlarged the picture. The street names were still correct. The neighboring dairy had become a self-storage business, but the boundary wall was the same. He could account for the whole site on foot in fifteen minutes. Eighteen structures seemed optimistic.

The little kitchen grew warmer as the toaster worked. For once he let it finish instead of taking the bread early. He transferred part of the deposit to Haddon, paid for the transformer, and discovered there was enough left for dinner that did not depend on a supermarket reducing something at eight o'clock.

On his workbench a repaired desk fan waited for a customer who had promised to return in August. Theo turned it to face away from the window so it would stop collecting dust in the grille. He caught himself arranging the other finished jobs too, making them appear busy rather than abandoned.

He put on his coat.

He had a sensible question about the order of the repairs. He also had the site plan, which might answer it without requiring a conversation. The distinction mattered to him more than it should have.

Call Adrian Vale before leaving. Turn to section 002.

Examine the plan and repair list first. Turn to section 003.
