Near the bottom step, the white sign read:
HALLOWEEN CANDY
PLEASE COME IN
Under that, in smaller letters:
WARM UP A LITTLE.
“That’s nice,” Caleb said.
“That’s how signs work,” Wren said, but there wasn’t much force behind it.
Nora looked back. From here she could still see the Westons’ porch and, beyond it, a group of small costumed figures crossing under a streetlamp. A woman in a yellow raincoat was pulling the hood up over a child’s head. They were perhaps two minutes away.
Mae pressed a thumb into the wet edge of her breastplate.
“I’m going to end up wearing the box this used to be.”
“We’ll ask if they’ve got a towel,” June said.
Eli climbed the steps first and knocked.
The sound traveled through the door, a solid wooden sound. Nora could smell something baking. Apples, she thought at first, because of Caleb’s cake. Then orange peel, the bitter part of it warmed, and a little cinnamon.
They waited.
Eli knocked again.
“Hello?”
No answer. The piano continued somewhere inside.
“They’re probably in the kitchen,” Caleb said.
Nora could see a narrow strip of light between the door and its frame. It wasn’t latched. She touched it with two fingers, meaning to widen the gap enough to call through.
The door swung inward without a squeak.
